Previously, this website belonged to Auckland Castle which is located in Durham City. The castle is a great attraction place given that it was established about 900 years ago by the See of Durham which is the most powerful Diocese in the North, to house its bishops.
The castle lies at a strategic position above Rivers Wear and Gauness and has a beautiful garden and thus for many years it has attracted visitors from all parts of the world. Today, the castle offers various facilities for weddings, banquets, dinner parties, board meetings, conferences and also exhibitions for interested people. More information about it can be found on the Auckland Castle’s official website here
A Visit to Durham
In 2011 I visited Durham City in the company of my mum. It was her city of choice. She had been indoors for a long time since she was on medication and thus when she finally got better, I found it necessary to take her for a vacation which could help her forget the worries and challenges that she had been through. It was one of the best visit and a good opportunity to share the culture and tour some scenic places in the area. I had promised to take my mother for this vacation back in 2009.
It was in late 2009 that I received some of the most shocking news in my life when my mother was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. That day, I had gone to pick her at the airport as she was arriving from a business trip. I was happy to see her. As we drove from the airport towards town, she told me that she had some concerns about her right breast. She had detected something which she thought could be a lump and thus instructed me to take her to a hospital for screening. At first I thought that it was a joke and never thought that it could be anything serious. Therefore I insisted that we drive home.
She didn’t buy any of my theories and thus I had to take her to a private hospital in the city. She underwent a mammogram which indicated that there was a lump on her breast. The radiologist who was attending to her suggested that it was important to undergo further tests so as to ascertain the stage of the cancer. A Breast MRI concluded that she was suffering from Breast Cancer Stage II.
The Beauty of the City
My mum was shocked. I didn’t know how to console her but I tried my best. That evening while we were at home, I helped her plan on how to battle the disease. It was this night that I told her that I would see her through the battle with cancer and if she survived, then I would take her for a vacation. She was the one who chose Durham City. She had heard about the beauty of the city from a friend and she told me that she had always longed to visit the city.
She underwent a mastectomy after three weeks which was followed by chemotherapy and radiation therapy. During this battle she lost a lot of weight and I had to help her with the alkaline diet which she had read about on the internet. The battle took about a year and half. Finally she survived it.
I kept my word and paid for our trip to Durham
She was overwhelmed when we arrived there and for the next two weeks we spent time sightseeing, visiting places and having good time together on the dramatic coastline of the city. Some of the most fascinating places which we visited include Auckland Castle which was established about 900 years ago, Beamish Museum, Vale of Durham and Locomotion, the National Railway Museum at Shildon. We also enjoyed some scenic sights in Durham Dales.
I’ve decided to rebuild this site and I will be publishing some interesting posts about the things that you can do in Durham and also the attractions places that you can visit there. I will also be publishing some of the events scheduled in various places in Durham and its surrounding.
